Development of Advanced LED Phosphors by Spray-based Processes for Solid-State Lighting
Posted in Energy Efficiency, LEDs/Lighting, Tech Briefs on Wednesday, March 17 2010
Luminescent materials were developed using aerosol processes, for making improved LED devices for solid-state lighting. In essence this means improving white light emitting phosphor-based LEDs by improvement of the phosphor and phosphor layer.

Sliding Mode Pulsed Current Averaging IC Drivers for High-Brightness Light Emitting Diodes
Posted in Energy Efficiency, LEDs/Lighting, Carbon Dioxide, Tech Briefs on Wednesday, March 17 2010
Light Emitting Diode (LED) driver ICs associated with specific (uniquely operated) switching power supplies that optimize performance for High Brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs) have been developed. The LED drivers feature fewer external components and high power efficiency.

Power Generator With Thermo-Differential Modules
Posted in Energy Storage, Solar Power, Renewable Energy, Thermoelectrics, Tech Briefs on Thursday, March 04 2010
A new thermoelectric power generator from Johnson Space Center consists of an oven box and a solar cooker/solar reflector unit. The solar reflector concentrates sunlight into heat and transfers the heat into the oven box via a heat pipe.

Mechanical Extraction of Power From Ocean Currents and Tides
Posted in Hydropower, Energy Storage, Renewable Energy, Tech Briefs on Wednesday, March 03 2010
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has proposed a scheme for generating electric power from rivers and from ocean currents, tides, and waves that not entail the high maintenance costs of other schemes that call for submerged electric generators and cables.

Fine-Water-Mist Multiple-Orientation-Discharge Fire Extinguisher
Posted in Pollution, Carbon Dioxide, Tech Briefs on Thursday, January 14 2010
A fine-water-mist fire-suppression device developed at John H. Glenn Research Center can be discharged uniformly in any orientation via a high-pressure gas propellant. Research in recent years has shown that fine water mist can be an effective alternative to ozone-destructive Halons.

Fuel-Cell Water Separator
Posted in Alternative Fuels, Transportation, Energy Efficiency, Hydrogen, Tech Briefs on Thursday, January 07 2010
NASA Glenn Research Center has designed, built, and tested an innovative fuel-cell water separator that not only removes liquid water from a fuel cell’s exhaust ports, but does so with no moving parts or other power-consuming components. The separator employs the potential and kinetic energies already present in the moving exhaust flow.
