Hybrid Lighting System

Thursday, November 01 2012
The BioLume™ Garage Fixture is the first installment in a
new series of patented bi-level hybrid fixtures from EverLast®
Lighting (Jackson, MI) that integrate a 5000K induction lamp
and amber LEDs with SMART sensor controls to provide biologically
sensitive, dark-sky friendly, and energy-efficient
lighting. When an area is vacant, amber-colored LEDs emit
biologically-friendly light. When the sensor is triggered by
motion, the induction lamp turns on to provide bright white
light for enhanced
security.
Developed
in
partnership
with the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) at UC Davis and
EverLast® Lighting, the BioLume™ Series was inspired by the
increasing con cern within the industry that certain light levels
at night may result in biological disturbances or imbalances
to certain species due to the hormonal stimulation that
occurs with shorter wavelengths corresponding to typical
high color temperature light sources.

Specifying Gaskets for Outdoor LED Lighting Fixtures

Saturday, September 01 2012
LED lighting technology has the potential to lower energy
consumption and reduce maintenance costs on outdoor
installations such as area lighting and parking lights,
street lights and other “difficult to reach” outdoor locations.
When operating in controlled temperatures and weatherproof
environments, solid state LED lights are designed to operate
for 5 to 10 years. Outdoor LED housings and lighting
enclosures are constructed from powder coated aluminum to resist
the effects of direct sun and weather for many years. However,
if the full payback on the investment in outdoor LED lighting
is to be realized, the gaskets required to protect the solid state
electronics must function for the 5 to 10 year life of the product.

Efficient Optical Spectroscopy of Single Solid-State Quantum Emitters
Posted in Lighting, Tech Briefs, LT on
Saturday, September 01 2012
Devices such as light-emitting diodes
(LEDs) and lasers are typically based
upon the accumulated emission from a
large number of gas phase atoms, ions in
solids, electron-hole pairs in semiconductors,
or other fluorescence centers. In such
macroscopic devices, the behavior of individual
fluorescence centers is often hard
to ascertain, but there are a number of
benefits if this can be done. In addition
to informing the design of traditional
light-emitting devices, such single emitter
spectroscopy is central to a number of important
new technologies. For example, future
information processing systems might
take advantage of single emitters as single
photon sources, as memory nodes in a
quantum network, or as low power optical
transistors, while metrology may benefit
from the sensitivity of a single emitter to its
local environment.
